IoT Security Roadmap: step-by-step

15 steps in order. Open any step in the map above to track progress and take notes.

Orientation

  1. 1.Start here

    Start· Beginner· ~0.5h

IoT devices — cameras, sensors, smart home and industrial gadgets — are often insecure and hard to update. This roadmap covers how to assess and secure them. Networking basics are needed.

    • Know basic networking and Linux
    • Have one IoT device you own for practice
    • Plan your study time

Core skills

  1. 2.IoT threat model

    Concept· Intermediate· ~2h

IoT threats span the device, its firmware, local interfaces, network services, mobile apps and cloud backends. NIST IR 8259 and the OWASP IoT project describe baseline expectations.

    • Map the components of an IoT system
    • Identify threats per component
    • Use baseline capability guidance

    Tools & tech: IoT

Learn it on CyberA4U:Module 20: Connected Device and Industrial System Attacks

  2. 3.Device identity and authentication

    Concept· Intermediate· ~3h

Each device needs a unique identity and credentials so it can be authenticated and revoked individually — no shared default passwords.

    • Avoid default and shared credentials
    • Use per-device certificates or keys
    • Plan revocation

    Tools & tech: IoT

  3. 4.Firmware update security

    Concept· Intermediate· ~4h

Secure updates must be signed, verified before installation, and able to roll back safely. Devices that can't update stay vulnerable.

    • Explain signed and verified updates
    • Plan update delivery and rollback
    • Track firmware versions

    Tools & tech: IoT

  4. 5.Securing local interfaces (UART, JTAG, USB)

    Tool· Intermediate· ~2h

Debug ports and local interfaces can give direct access to a device. Production devices should disable or protect them.

    • Recognize common hardware debug interfaces
    • Understand the risk of exposed debug access
    • Know protective measures

    Tools & tech: IoT

  5. 6.Securing IoT cloud backends and APIs

    Lab· Intermediate· ~3h

Most IoT devices talk to a cloud service. Weak API authentication or authorization there can expose every device at once.

    • Secure device-to-cloud authentication
    • Apply API security best practices
    • Isolate customers' data

    Tools & tech: IoT

  6. 7.Reducing IoT network exposure

    Concept· Intermediate· ~4h

IoT devices should sit on separate networks with only the connections they need — never directly exposed to the internet.

    • Segment IoT devices
    • Disable unnecessary services and UPnP
    • Monitor device traffic

    Tools & tech: IoT

Advanced practice

  1. 8.IoT privacy

    Concept· Intermediate· ~2h

Devices with microphones, cameras and location data collect sensitive personal information. Privacy by design limits what is collected and shared.

    • Identify personal data collected by devices
    • Apply data minimization
    • Give users control and transparency

    Tools & tech: IoT

  2. 9.Secure boot concepts

    Tool· Intermediate· ~3h

Secure boot verifies each stage of firmware before running it, so tampered firmware won't start.

    • Explain the chain of trust
    • Understand hardware roots of trust
    • Know secure boot's limits

    Tools & tech: IoT

  3. 10.Monitoring IoT fleets

    Concept· Intermediate· ~4h

Organizations need an inventory of devices, their firmware versions and unusual behavior across the fleet.

    • Maintain a device inventory
    • Track firmware and vulnerability status
    • Detect abnormal device behavior

    Tools & tech: IoT

  4. 11.Common vulnerabilities

    Lab· Intermediate· ~2h

The most common IoT weaknesses are default passwords, insecure network services, lack of updates and insecure data storage.

    • Recognize the OWASP IoT Top 10 categories
    • Check devices for common issues
    • Prioritize fixes

    Tools & tech: IoT

Learn it on CyberA4U:Module 20: Connected Device and Industrial System Attacks

  5. 12.Testing approaches

    Concept· Intermediate· ~3h

IoT testing combines network, web/API, mobile app, firmware and hardware testing, always on devices you own or are authorized to test.

    • Plan an IoT assessment
    • Use the OWASP IoT Security Testing Guide
    • Test only with authorization

    Tools & tech: IoT

  6. 13.IoT hardening checklist

    Tool· Intermediate· ~4h

A hardening checklist gives deployers a quick way to secure devices: change defaults, update, segment, disable unused features and monitor.

    • Apply baseline hardening steps
    • Document exceptions
    • Review devices regularly

    Tools & tech: IoT

Assessment

  1. 14.Skills checkpoint

    Checkpoint· Intermediate· ~2h

Check that you can threat-model, assess and harden an IoT deployment.

    • Threat-model an IoT system
    • Identify common weaknesses
    • Harden and monitor devices

Capstone

  1. 15.IoT Security — ready

    Finish· Intermediate· ~1h

You can now secure IoT systems. Continue with OT/ICS Security, Network Administrator or Mobile App Security.
